I am totally a sucker for a good weight-loss story, especially those with a picture of the person holding up their large-sized jeans in front of them.
And I totally get engrossed in those house flipping shows, where someone canvases a neighborhood to buy the most desperate fixer-upper, then proceeds to transform it into the most trendy bungalow on the block.
Don't show me wafer-thin, beautiful people or perfectly manicured gardens.
Uh-uh.
I want to see the before-and-after pictures.
I want to see something old and broken down, something that seems so lifeless and worthless, beautifully restored beyond its former glory.
I want to see an inspiring personal transformation, from the inside-out.
So this gets me to thinking...
What is it about America's obsession with DIY projects and home improvement, make-overs and weight loss stories?
In my estimation, it is this:
REDEMPTION
We all love a good redemption story.
Why?
Because in our heart of hearts, no matter how good our lives currently are, we all know that we, and the world we live in, are broken.
We live in a world that does not function the way it was intended to by its Creator God.
And with every broken down house that gets a fashion-forward facelift...
and with every discarded piece of furniture that gets a fresh coat of paint and a fun new purpose...
and with every person who sheds a hundred pounds and feels like they can now run a marathon...
We all get a front-row seat to another beautiful redemption story, which echoes the biggest redemption story that holds true for us all...
the redemption of our souls to enjoy perfect fellowship with our Creator.
Just the way it was always meant to be.
