Genesis, History, and Science...Oh My!

Have you ever wrestled with questions like these?
  • Did God create the world in six literal days, or slowly over time?
  • Who was Cain's wife?
  • When did dinosaurs roam the Earth (and what happened to them)?
  • How did all the animals fit onto Noah's Ark?
  • Was there truly a global flood?
  • How did different races come about?
  • Was there an Ice Age?

I know I have!

When I was in high school and college, I felt as though I was told one thing about the origins of Earth and man from my science textbooks and a completely different thing from church.  As a believer, I struggled to reconcile the fossil record with what the Bible teaches about creation and Noah's flood.  In truth, my church and my science class felt completely at odds with one another.  As a result, I would find myself glossing over certain areas of science because they did not seem compatible with my faith.  Ultimately, I found myself disengaging from the conversation of evolution, radiocarbon dating, fossils, dinosaurs, and more.

Once I became a mother of preschoolers, these topics seemed to resurface for me in the children's television programming my children would watch--shows like Dora the Explorer and Dinosaur Train, among many others.  Although I truly believed what God said in Genesis--six literal days of creation, a literal Adam and Eve, a global flood--I wasn't sure how to teach my own children these things in the face of so much educational material to the contrary.

Well, I am pleased to report that in the last few months I have discovered a few resources that have helped me tremendously with this issue!  Not only have they strengthened my own knowledge of how observational science fits within the pages of Scripture, but they have provided me with a plethora of tools and resources with which to teach my children. I'd like to take a few quick minutes today to delve into these resources, which I hope will also be a help and an encouragement to you, too!

The first resource I'd like to share with you is the Is Genesis History? feature-length documentary hosted by Del Tackett.  It premiered at our local theater two months ago, however it is now available for purchase on DVD.  It provides an excellent overview of topics such the origin of fossils, dating the Earth, dinosaurs, the Ice Age, the global flood, and the Tower of Babel, among others.  If you have already seen the film, here are some suggestions of five things to do next, straight from the film webpage, to learn more and put your knowledge into action. (As always, just click the hypertext to jump directly to the site.)  If you haven't seen the film yet, I'd encourage you to purchase the DVD (on sale!) at this site.  And be sure to check out this site to download a viewing guide that will help you navigate the material as you watch the film in real time.

The second resource I'd highly recommend is the lecture series given by the folks at Answers in Genesis.  We were recently gifted this amazing lecture series given by Bryan Osbourne from Answers in Genesis, filmed at my parents' church.  You can request one of their speakers, such as Bryan Osbourne among others, to host an event at your church.  Answers in Genesis also has an extensive website chock full of educational articles, homeschooling and VBS resources, and apologetics resources to answer all of your questions.  If you are not already aware, this is the same organization that put together the Creation Museum and Ark Encounter in northern Kentucky.  What a GREAT way to literally see and explore how history and science fit within the pages of Scripture.
I hope to visit both one day soon!

Well, I trust that I have provided you with several resources to help you answer these very important questions for yourself and your family, as you bring observational science inline with the truth of God's Word!
